Different detectors are used in gamma, neutron and gamma-neutron active dosimeters. However, the silicon diode detector is most suitable semiconductor material in gamma-neutron dosimetry. Semiconductor detectors have many advantages over other types of detectors due to less volume, weight and bias voltage are needed to make the active personal dosimeters.
Active personal dosimeters (APD) are widely used in many fields, i.e. in the medical field and as operational dosimeters in nuclear power plants. Their use as legal dosimeters are already established in a few countries, and will increase in the near future.
